Where Poetry Lives
since 2009

How did you end up in the streets?
My husband, she says.
I wasn’t supposed to live
He thought the cancer would take me
I gave him everything
My children too
I sold everything
I wanted to leave them with something, not debt
But I survived
God wanted me to live
It was fear that brought me here
Four walls can’t hold me anymore
It’s not safe there anymore
They remind me of that asphyxiating night
The night he thought should be my last
He said I was no good to him weak
He already brought other women in my house
I can’t forget his hands around my neck
I had to run away.
