Los Angeles Poet Society Presents the Always Running Book Festival: Celebrating 30 Years of Luis J. Rodriguez's Timeless Memoir


Los Angeles, CA - Los Angeles Poet Society proudly announces the 2nd annual Always Running Book Festival, dedicated to Carlos Mancillas, a vibrant celebration marking the 30th anniversary of iconic Chicano Writer, Luis J. Rodriguez's remarkable and award-winning memoir, ALWAYS RUNNING.


This free event, held on May 28 from 12-5pm PST, will take place at the MKM Cultural Arts Center located at 11401 Chandler Blvd, North Hollywood, CA 91601.


Always Running has captured the hearts and minds of readers for three decades, inspiring and empowering countless individuals with its poignant narrative of resilience and triumph. The festival aims to honor the profound impact of this literary masterpiece and its enduring message of hope through literacy.


The Always Running Book Festival will be a captivating and immersive experience, featuring an array of engaging activities and performances for attendees of all ages.

Highlights of the event include:

  • Danza Mexicayotl - Ajolotes: Witness the indigenous Mexica heritage in full regalia, service, and blessings.


  • Theater: Witness powerful theatrical interpretations that bring scenes of the Always Running play to life on stage, capturing the essence of the memoir's profound themes.


  • Food by Chef Lee: Delight in delicious tacos handmade by Chef Lee, to tantalize your taste buds.


  • Featured Poets: Immerse yourself in the world of poetry as renowned poets, including Luis J. Rodriguez and Ramiro Rodriguez, captivate the audience with their heartfelt verses. Also, celebrate 30 years of "Open Fist" published by Tia Chucha Press.


  • Story Time in the Children's Garden: Engage young minds with an interactive children's area offering activities, a dedicated stage for storytelling, and a delightful ambiance to spark a love for literature, including a reading of Luis J. Rodriguez’s “It doesn’t have to be this way”, and “America is Her Name”.


  • Small Presses and Vendors : Explore a diverse range of vendors offering literary treasures, artisanal crafts, and unique merchandise, fostering a sense of community and discovery. (Tia Chucha Press, LA Poet Society Press, the Infinite Poets, and more)


  • Music & Entertainment: Enjoy soul-stirring musical performances by Juan Flautista, Zariyah the Fire Dancer, and the eclectic sounds from local independent radio station, Radio Ollin, KROJ 101.5 FM.

  • Open Mic for the People: Step onto the stage and share your own poetic voice or personal reflections during the open mic session, fostering an atmosphere of inclusivity and artistic expression.
